Savoring the Slow: Lessons from Three Snowy Days

Updated: Jan 10

Today marks day three of snow days. Our house is a mess, the laundry resembles Mount Everest, the kids are getting on each other’s nerves, and yet, my heart and cup are full. I had a moment earlier this morning when I thought, “I could get used to this.”

By “this,” I meant slow mornings without an alarm, not rushing to be anywhere, enjoying a cup of coffee while it’s still warm, and spending uninterrupted quality time with my family.

I am, by nature and by necessity, a schedule person. Being a mom of four little kids, two dogs, and a wife demands a certain amount of adherence to structure. Without routine, planning, and preparation, our home would quickly shift from beautiful chaos to a complete disaster. Going anywhere is like herding cats.

That said, these slow mornings are such a gift. I’m savoring them in a way I didn’t know was possible. They feel like a mini-vacation—a break from the usual demands of our daily lives. But like any vacation, they’re special because they’re temporary. I love them, but I’m also glad they’re not the norm.

The past few days have been a beautiful reminder of what truly matters. I’ve felt the joy of being part of a team where love and support shine through the mess and chaos. I’ve discovered that letting go of perfection and leaning into the moment creates space for laughter, connection, and gratitude.

As we eventually return to our regularly scheduled lives, I hope to carry a little of this snow day magic with me—a reminder to slow down, savor the moment, and let the laundry wait just a little longer.
